I'm based in SFO so was going to return to home directly from BDL, hence the one-way. Could I just get a r/t reward and not use the return portion? I'm not sure how throw-away ticketing is looked upon, but this situation seems daft to me, especially on a reward ticket.

Appreciate any feedback

It's part of the new AeroGrab(tm) method of squeezing members. In the past
One ways cost 1/2 + 5000 points, but now they're only available as 'classic plus rewards'. Aeroplan go one way (screwing the user), and AlaskaAir go the other (you can now get one ways for exactly 1/2 of a RT). I've dropped my Aeroplan Visa card, and gone with an Alaska Air one
