The reason for this is that too many mistakes are made which cost money.

BA airport staff however, will do it without batting an eyelid.

Lesson: If your flight is cancelled, just go to the airport and get it sorted there.
I found this during the August security problems. My flight from SFO on the friday was cancelled and I was moved to the saturday. This flight was cancelled and I was moved to the Tuesday! So Iwent down to the airport on the saturday afternoon and the agent put me on the 2nd saturday flight which was still running, meaning I could get back to work on monday instead of the thursday that was in the offing.
