Was any reason given for the cancellation to the OP? Surely a cancellation at short notce would trigger the EU compensation rules (that is not to say that BA would not try to wriggle out of payment by using lame excuses). Thus this seems to be a very stupid commercial policy, if the potential "saving" to BA arising from not using the codeshare is actually outweighed by the cost of compensation.

This seems to me almost a case study ad for the BA PP Amex (assuming you can book uisng the card and this was not a company made booking). Amex would pay up to £400 for alternative transport or overnight accomodation.

BA is starting to look more like a low service (I am not sure about low cost) airline every day.
