Monday December 8, 6:44 pm ET
MINNEAPOLIS (Dow Jones)--Pilots at Mesaba Airlines declined arbitration to settle the contract with the airline, setting the stage for a possible strike.
In a press release Monday, the Air Line Pilots Association (News - Websites) , which represents 844 Mesaba pilots, said it didn't view binding arbitration as an "acceptable option to settle contract, in accordance with the mandate of the Mesaba pilot group."
Later this week, the National Mediation Board is expected to announce the exact strike deadline. The deadline, which comes at the end of a 30-day cooling off period, would likely occur in the second week of January.
And this from Star Tribune:http://www.startribune.com/stories/535/4251984.html
Within a week, Eagan-based Northwest Airlines will reveal whether it will remove 36 Avro RJ-85 jets from Mesaba's fleet. Northwest pays Mesaba to fly the jets on Northwest's regional routes, and the Avro flights account for 40 percent of Mesaba's revenue. Northwest is considering replacing the four-engine Avros with more cost-efficient twin-engine jets.
Northwest has said that it has been looking at maybe going with another carrier to fly the Avro routes, aside from Mesaba or Pinnacle.
While there is no excuse for their behavior, tensions are extremely high at Mesaba right now.
And 4 oversized carry on bags?!?! I don't know what makes the guy think that he can bring that many on. If he's moving or something, he should ship some of his stuff with fedex or something.
