Don't feel bad as a SE. I received the same "Platinum challenge" as a Gold while waiting to board a DTW-LAX run. I did exactly the same as you - "educated" Mr. Super-frequent-flyer that you don't need an UG to ride up front, you can actually buy FC tickets.

I felt better afterwards, but it is still annoying to think about it.

Now, I don't have anything against Plat's in general - was PE in 2003 and 2004 myself - but I have detected the occasional self-important jerk on occasion. I imagine this is just as common everywhere else there is an upper-tiered rewards program - human nature and all.
