I have had this before - i think that it is simpler, easier and quicker for the boarding crew to check the computer as if you are travelling and then shut the gate rather then take you off the system. I have even received miles and tier points before on domestic flights and have since always checked in on a last leg even when not flying - sometimes it works......
This is all subject to having no luggage obviously.
