It would be easier to book us on seperate tickets because we can then pay seperately with seperate credit cards.
As there are 2 companions and they will travel on a non-upgradable fare, that's not a possible advantage.
But will we be able to preboard together? And can they check-in with me at the premium check-in?
Also if they would be on my PNR, would i lose the possibility to get an upgrade?

You obviously want to travel WITH your companions, right? So, you should try to put yourselves on the same itin if you can so that you can choose seats together (premium ones), such as exit row, bulkhead, etc.
For the pre-boarding and premium check-in, everytime I was traveling with another person not on my ticket, they still let them checkin with me and board with me.
So, it's really just for the seat assignments.
