You obviously want to travel WITH your companions, right? So, you should try to put yourselves on the same itin if you can so that you can choose seats together (premium ones), such as exit row, bulkhead, etc.

For the pre-boarding and premium check-in, everytime I was traveling with another person not on my ticket, they still let them checkin with me and board with me.

So, it's really just for the seat assignments.
