With NW, there are two options when using telephone reservations:
1) Hold the itinerary (no credit card required), and the fare is not guaranteed.
2) Request the purchase of the ticket (credit card required), and it will be issued at midnight the following night. No changes after that time.
Safest bet, IMO, with NW is to request the purchase, then call and cancel before that time if you find something better. You better be serious about the trip, though, because if you forget and the ticket gets issued, you just bought it.
