I can vouch for that. Changing to an earlier flight is possible and one might be allowed straight on if the flight is not full or be put on a waitlist otherwise. Admittedly, my experience is based on longhaul WBC flights with European tags (booked in Z or higher) yet it shows that it is actually possible to change flights on the day of departure, likely depending on the conditions of the ticket.
