Not sure if its actually that simple. I accept that, for a short haul where you buy can 2 singles for the price of a return, the outbound may remain.

However .... you cannot buy a 1-way shorthaul I-class, for example. Only full fare one-way business class tickets. If you booked an I-class and only tried to use the return, I reckon it would be cancelled and you'd be stuck. But I could be wrong.
