If you bought the ticket directly from United you should be okay (i.e., the upgrade really is on request.) OTHERWISE, you should definitely request 500 mile upgrades on the YUAS segment (over the phone or via United.com.) Don't worry -- if it clears you won't be charged any 500 mile upgrades for the YUAS segment.
