Based on avail. and room types, in my experience many of the hotels in the Caribbean will offer cash or point upgrades on award bookings if the lowest level "basic" room is not available at time of booking.
A search might bring up some of these threads. But, in all cases, I've never had a rate changed without me knowing after I've booked it - like what this sounds like.
