I was once stopping at the fairly grand E&O Hotel in Penang. I checked in at about 4pm my hotel butler suggested if I wanted a massage in the room to contact him and he would arrange someone to come - taking this at face value (and it being a fancy hotel), I said, "maybe, later"
At about 11pm that night when I was tucked up in bed and falling asleep when I received a call from the Butler asking me if I wanted a masseuse sending up that evening.... the penny then dropped and I think I realised what he was getting at, I politely but firmly declined and put the receiver down
As for the earlier comment about disconnecting the phone to prevent bad guys visiting what they suspect is an unoccupied room - I don't understand this. With the phone disconnected or switched off won't the line just ring when they call, thus making it more likely for them to visit? Certainly at home, if i switch the phone off callers just get the ring tone.
