On a somewhat related note, years ago, someone on FlyerTalk quoted the ticket validity rules for UA (which I printed out), and those rules state there are no time limits for reissue of tickets issued between April 1992 and February 2002. Depending on when the ticket was originally issued in this 10-year period, different exchange fees apply (ranging from $25 to $100).
I haven't flown UA in well over a decade, but I fully intend to cash in a 1997 expired ticket for a few dollars whenever I do.
Perhaps AA had comparable rules in place during this time period.
