I don't think this is technically allowed on awards, but it seems like you were flying on a paid ticket so perhaps it is. Last year, I tried to route BOS-SDQ-SJU to take advantage of the 777 service run on some Saturdays, but the booking agent wouldn't let me on an award. I tried to do the same thing as a standby trip but they wouldn't let me do it then either.
