Did you ask to be reaccomodated?
There's an AA flight out of LAX 8:20pm which you can get to by connecting to a CO EWR-LAX flight (CO65 leaves EWR at 3:25p and arrives LAX at 6:50p). Why waste a day at the Howard Johnson
