That can be quite a bit. BWI-PHL-IAH (I've done this a few times) is 93-> 500 + 1325 = 1825 miles. This is a lot more than 1235 miles if it were a "direct" flight.

If both segments are less than 500 miles, the direct flight costs you 50% of your miles (500 vs. 1000).
