If you look at the CDC reports, you will see the relative numbers and scale. Cruiselines are able to report the outbreaks because of the concentration. People stay for a short time in a hotel and hours on a flight and then scatter, so the hotels and airlines never even know about it. As a matter of fact, most people get it on a ship from people who board already sick, having picked it up before their trip on a plane or hotel room. So if you are worried about that, better stop traveling.
I attended a conference (on land) where about 40% of the attendees were felled by the bug, drawing the attention of the state health department. An MD friend who works at a senior rehab hospital called it Norwalk-type virus and said it was a concern in contained environments. By any name it was not a pretty thing. Not deadly to this group but ruined a good time real fast.
My own objection to cruises is more that I just don't like confined situations. That said, I would probably enjoy some of the intimate high-end theme/educational cruises I get brochures for -- if I could afford them.
