It really does boil down to what your ideal vacation is. My husband and I have a very calm (some would say boring!) life out here in the Midwest- we don't go out to restaurants and our main excursions are to the church and the grocery store. We like it that way. Our ideal vacation is foreign, with lots of history and interesting things to see and learn. I suppose that if you live with high pressure 24/7 and need to get away from it all, there's nothing like vegetating on the deck of a cruise ship while people bring you drinks with paper umbrellas in them- it's just not our thing.
And it has occurred to me that the day may come that my husband (who's 15 years older) gets to the point that he's less able to schlep luggage and climb up and down stairways in subway and train stations and that I won't be able to take up the slack. We may have to resort to (shudder) Fully Escorted Deluxe Motorcoach Tours. But I hope that's a long time from now.
