Your flight went into the Arctic region, but it's not like the "Polar 2" route CO99 uses, which goes almost straight north from EWR to 89-degree N and then comes back straight south to HKG. 89-degree N is about 70 miles from the N. Pole.
On CO 99, basically if you sit on the right side, you're facing East on the way up from EWR, and you're facing West on the way down towards HKG.
