Basically, she received an offer in the mail from Amex few months backs for a balance transfer to her Amex Blue card - 0% for life, just pay a small transfer fee. So she duly did, about £7 or £8k - keeping all the literature, contracts etc...very fastidious she is.
Last week, she checks her statements, and notices they've been charging her interest for the last couple of months. She calls up & they say 'oh no, it was an error, not meant to be for life, just a few months - so we charged you, & no sorry we didn't bother informing you.'
They then said they would immediately get back to her regarding refunding the interest - and haven't bothered calling back, after 5 days. This she reminded me of, in very loud voice, at 2am today as I was dozing off on the sofa, as if I was to blame (referred her to Amex as had had a high opinion of them til now)...she is genuinely stressed by this whole affair - something like £150 in interest a month she is now being charged for a while now.
This, IMO, is sheer evil theft & Bait & Switch tactics, which must break dozens of Consumer Protection & credit acts - or can they indeed simply break a contract after a few months, without bothering to tell you - and make you lump the £hundreds in pounds you've paid them, on the basis of trust & honouring of said contract? It utterly defies belief that the offer was some kind of typo, and would love an explanation as to how it can have been anything offer than a decision, due to it's popularilty & realisation of lost profits - that they decided to cancel & dishonour the contract, & lie about how it was an error.
The Amex woman on the phone said, as if this was some kind of defence, that it had been big news this whole error - has anyone else heard of it, and taken any action?
Would love to know BA's position on this whole issue, what with Amex being their bosum buddy - would like to think they would wish to disavow themselves of such commercial partners - but presumably doesn't register on the radar this. Would be like BA rescinding their current sale fares & refunding back all tix, without any explanation, minus the credit card booking fees, one would presume - commercial suicide.
Did you perhaps simply transfer a balance that was subject to terms, which specify that the balance transfer balance is the first to be paid off in monthly payments if you are using it for spending as well?
Hence, if you spend x per month, you are charged interest on the x balance, and nothing on the transferred balance, resulting in charges accrueing?
Check that is the case - if not, then no excuse from Amex will suffice - if it is, read the literature more carefully next time!
