Better to get a refund of the interest reasonably quickly, draw a line under it, put it down to experience, and get on with the rest of your life.
Have you tried the small claims court? It's hardly a crusade. Issue claim, get hearing date, turn up, have your say, judge rules, end of story. And all of those stages only happen if AMEX don't settle, which they undoubtedly will.
What will turn into a crusade is if you end up locked into increasingly moronic correspondence with AMEX or the ombudsman or the FSA. Now that could take over your life, because you'd end up not getting anywhere.
