I would advise against going via anywhere in the US. The immigration/customs hassle and having to pick up and recheck your bags is not worth it.
But the advantage is that you don't have to go through customs at the end of the trip! Just pick up your bags and walk out of the airport. I guess there are both positive and negative aspects about changing planes in the US, I personally prefer to have actually arrived after a long flight, not to have to take another flight.
