He has a visa to visit Vietnam, but the dates are wrong and he will be arriving in the country at 10pm the night before his visa is valid. He is willing to just wait around until midnight before going through immigration. The question is will the airline let him even get on the plane?

Whichever airline he's flying into VietNam probably wouldn't let him board. I had a similar situation where my jet-lagged brain messed up what happened when I crossed the International Date Line and I put the wrong date on my VN visa application. I figured it out on the flight to HK, where I was spending a couple of days, and asked CX about it when I landed. They told me if I didn't get it fixed they wouldn't let me board out of HK. It took about 20 minutes to get it fixed at the VN embassy in HK, so no problem. Of course that was eight years ago, so YFMMV (Your Friend's Milage May Vary).
