When I booked an award ticket with a stopover, I complained about the inherent unfairness of charging a fee for a non-Internet booking when their own programming choices made it impossible to book that ticket over the Internet in the first place. I didn't get the fee waived, but I got a comparable amount of miles. (BTW, with AA at least you can also get an open-jaw ticket if you want to drive from DC to Philly. You can even have one of each on the same ticket, though that wouldn't affect this trip.)
