I would expect a noisy laptop to be consistent. Since this is just a day or so old, could there be a CD or DVD in the drive? That might account for intermittent noise like you describe as the machine spins the disk up for a moment to see what's in it for whatever reason.

If that's not it, I wouldn't worry about class, there's probably enough ambient noise in even a quiet class to mask it.
