If his comments were truly insane (indicating that he's not alive, that some supreme being wants him to do something when flying, that he's being sent on a mission, etc.) there could be serious cause for concern. But instead, he only appears to be a believer of a homespun conspiracy theory. There are a lot of people who believe that, for instance, much of the 9/11 events "don't add up" and that the government and other authorities haven't been completely forthright about what they know. I don't think that qualifies someone to be categorized as "insane" and further, I'm not necessarily sure that should lead to the termination of one's employment. I think that's up to his union reps. and his employer to work out, frankly.
“Our senior lawyer and senior engineer both said that on its face, it’s an insane complaint. … It sounds like he’s a troubled guy.”
That is a comment from the person who is essentially HIS lawyer for the APLA. Pretty clear. Additionally, I never said he was insane, I said he was "sick". Paranoia is a clinical diagnosis that he MAY have and IF so he should not have the lives of 400+ people in his hands...ever. Just the possiblily is enough to take action immediatly. Paranoid people make decisions based on delusion and fear and should not be put in a position to make a mistake. Pilots are fact-based people and need to trust their instruments, aircraft, and instinct. Trust is not possible in someone who is clinically paranoid and yes he should lose his job. I am not suggesting he be "fired" but taken out of the role he is in for the safety of the flying public. You fly with this guy and let me know how that goes..I will take a pass.
