I've got a three year old toshiba and it can be loud when the fan spools up to high speed. Most of the time it is quiet, but if it is not getting good airflow the fan will kick it up a gear. If anything mine seems to do this more frequently as it has aged. Of course if I am using it sitting in the recliner watching TV, airflow will be reduced vs. sitting flat on a desk top.
