Skyteam and NW has a hole in the route system for US to Australia travel. Just pay for the fare on Qantas, United, Air New Zealand, or Hawaiian.

I remember the days of NW flying from LAX-SYD nonstop 3 days a week. They also flew Osaka to Melbourne.

I used to work the HNL-SYD flights when we got our first -400, those were the days *sigh*.. slight correction on the above post, as we've never flown to Melbourne. The Osaka flights were to Sydney (I worked those as well).
