I did, they did, but said I still couldn't pick seats for my partner, and neither could BA! The agent I spoke with was actually very friendly, and said she'd be happy to book seats for my partner next to me, but said she could only do it if the system showed her a seat map when looking at my partner's booking. It didn't, so she couldn't.

Otherwise, the chance of 62J staying open is not great. You could always be a naughty boy and book a fully flexible ticket in someone elses name and put that person into 62J, then cancel that booking just before OLCI opens. This would improve your chance of getting your partner into that seat.
Thanks for the tip, this is what I did. I was warned that BA could notify the agency some point that the flight was full and they'd cancel the reservation if it wasn't ticketed. I suppose in that case I could ticket and then cancel and get a refund, but I'd be out a lot of money while waiting for it.
