So, by following the advice that Hertz gave me, I ended up with a new AAA card that I couldn't use on my first rental. And I didn't even need it to get a discount. I wasted an hour looking up rates at Hertz and at AAA and finding they were the same.

It's not always the same. Sometimes the AAA rate is the same as the other discounts, but AAA can often give you a special AAA weekend or AAA weekly rate. Also, when the rates are high, and all of the discounts are only 5% (such as on a one way), AAA will always give you at least 10%. If you rent often, the AAA card is definitely worth it.
