The only solution I can see will
not work for Membership Rewards, but should work for American Express credit cards that earn other types of rewards such as Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints, Delta Skymiles, or Hilton HHonors points. In my opinion this is too much trouble if your landlord accepts Mastercard and VISA. You could use Merrill+ VISA (no annual fee, earns British Airways miles) or Citi HHonors VISA (no annual fee), but here it is...
Use an SPG American Express to purchase an American Express Travelers Cheque Card. This will be treated as a purchase, you will not be charged interest, and you will earn one Starpoint per dollar. (You can fund the card with your Platinum Card, but the transaction does not earn Membership Rewards points). Use the TCC to withdraw cash from ATM. Maximum draw is $400 per day, which means you will need three or four draws per month. Use the currency to pay the rent directly or to buy a money order.
There are one time fees for the original purchase of the card, and $5.00 fee each time you add funds. The fee to withdraw from an ATM is $2.50 plus whatever the ATM owner adds, say $1.50. $4.00 to withdraw $400 is 1%.
American Express places many restrictions on the Travelers Cheque card. There are rigid limits on how much value can be on the card, how often you can refill it, and they appear to monitor individual usage and will decline to refill the card if they don't like the pattern. In my experience you do NOT want to fund the card, withdraw all the money on consecutive days, and repeat. Don't be greedy, let them earn some interest on your cash, draw $400 per week.
