A few weeks back Mrs. Fishintheobx was on an award ticket, I booked a last minute and met her in CLT for the flight. My upgrade cleared, asked nicely at the gate if they could put her up front with me. They did...but the plane and F was pretty empty.
This is exactly right. My girlfriend and I have
sometimes been able to get an upgrade at the gate or at the ticket counter when flying on award tickets. Sometimes not, though! We're both GP's.
Just ask nicely. It's really up to the employee you talk to.
