I usually bring my free pre-flight adult beverage with me when I self downgrade to sit next to my wife.
Actually, my non-elite spouse has been upgraded to sit next to me once or twice... even when we are on the same PNR. Really nice GAs loading very empty airplanes have done this upgrade. And the silly thing is that I'm a silver (not for long) and I have never asked for the upgrade. Some of NWA's GAs really care.
