NW holds a reservation and price WITH A CREDIT CARD for 24hrs. Unless the day you booked the reservation was the last day to ticket the M class booking, then the fare and space should still have been available.
The agent may have just parroted the normal "bla bla bla your fare is not guaranteed until purchased bla bla bla".
