If you want to use UA miles to upgrade a ticket on TG, then read this link from the staralliance website: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51503,00.html

Basically, you'll need to buy a Y/B economy fare. I'm not sure if you can use miles to upgrade from Y to Prem Y .
