Buy the umbrella and stick it in a Postpak tube, it is not a security risk, TSA may disagree, but you may have troulbe putting it in the overheads.
Oh I would have loved an umbrella on my QF SYD-DBO trip, DH 8, torrential rain that had everyone saturated from the walk to the terminal to board the aircraft. Even the FA got very wet when they put the stairs up and it went all over her. Overall everybody on that plane was wet and the toilet was not cleaned from an overnight stay.....
