Connecting to an international flight really is not much different than connecting to a domestic flight, except that if you miss your international connection, your options typically are far more limited. For that reason alone, I would book an earlier LGA-DFW flight. Forty minutes is easily doable at DFW if you arrive on time, but if you're, say, 20 minutes late, you could be screwed.
