I have made ORD connections with only 1hr50 going from LHR and onto DFW fine a few times. The bags always make it even if in Y like myself, the only problem is the queueing and getting back through security after passport control. However it usually works out that i can quickly pop into the AC use their decent toilets, take a newspaper and walk briskly onto the plane jsut as 1st boarding starts so only having to wait around for a minute or so for pre-boarding. So, no i don't recommend shipping it, but if you feel you must then bare the extra cost.
International to domestic connections in terminal D at DFW has been easier for me than ORD. I can't speak for the arrival time of the NRT flight (early afternoon?) but when I've arrived around 6:30pm from LGW there has never been more than a handfull of people at the security line at the top of the escalator after re-checking bags. IIRC there are two entries to the secure area so in the unlikely event one is backed up there is another option in easy walking distance.
