Agreed. I learned this a few years ago when I had a reservation with Hertz in Ireland that dropped by EUR100 (about 30% IIRC) about 1 week before we were travelling. I always make a booking as early as I know the details and then check it periodically towards the travel date. The Hertz.com site doesn't seem to care about the fact that I can have 2 bookings for exactly the same dates, cars, etc. at different rates so if I see a better rate, I book it and then go back and cancel the earlier, more expensive, one. I've saved quite a bit on rentals over the past few years by taking advantage of Hertz's willlingness to reduce the price to get the car rented out.
