Everyone is missing the point that the OP is not talking about throwing away the return segment.
he is checking in for a 2 flight #, one way itinerary, with wife and 2 kids, and he wants to not board for the second segment.
If it were me, I would make sure the record were split, so that the wife and kids aren't on the same locator.
