As a transplanted American academic, the Oxford comma is the one American punctuation choice with which I still firmly agree. While I see much wisdom in the British use of punctuation surrounding quotation marks, I feel that this reticence to insert a second comma, while understandably perhaps a holdover from the comma quotas during the war, seems a difference from the ways in which such a list scans when read aloud.
