We were very fortunate enough to stay in the JW Marriott Cancun during July 2004 which happened to be exactly 1 year before the hurricane hit.
We booked a free standard room for 1 week using our MarriottReward points but the front desk put us up on the 14th floor. Club 91 had only been inaugurated for maybe 1 month by then and when we got the sales pitch by the Club 91 staff, we decided to pay for the adder for it ($92/day incl tax) which was really worth it for our family of 4 as we pretty much ate all our meals there and back then, they did not charge extra for our children. They also refunded our payment for transportation from the airport to the hotel as it is a free Club 91 perk.
The main reason that I am posting is to point out that it is the odd numbered rooms that had the much better view--they looked down on the beautiful pool area that was sprawled out in front of the beach. Perhaps the rooms have been renumbered since the post hurricane renovation??
