In Europe, first floor rooms in some of the older hotels are the most desireable. Best rooms at the Ritz in Paris are the ones on the first floor. Hemingway suite at the Gritti is also on the first floor. Of course, keep in mind, that often, the first floor in these hotels is one-up from the Ground floor.
The linguistic differences remind me of my student days and first trip to the US - given a "second floor" room in a 2-storey building which to me had a ground floor and a first floor and "second" floor would have been the attic or roof. Very confusing!
