I guess I'm not easily creeped out because I have stayed in plenty of first floor rooms without giving it a thought - beyond normal precautions, that is, like making sure all doors and windows are locked, deadbolt on, etc. I do believe there are gizmos on the market (though I have never tried one) which will trigger an alarm if anyone tries to open the door. A quick google using "portable door alarm" turned up a bunch of them. Perhaps taking one of these along will help you get a better night's rest in a ground floor room.
