On Virgin on the 747-400 there are some seats on the upper deck ( 70-74) in the 2-2 configuration which is very nice.

Flying from the west coast of the US will help to maximise your sleep time as the flight time from the east coast ( at 6-7 hours) can result in only 2-3 hours sleep after the meal service.

From the west coast, I would choose SFO over LAX as San Francisco is a nicer airport ( but VS uses LAX T2 which is better than the Tom Bradley Intl Terminal at LAX)

I agree with everything here, other than I would emphasize that T2 at LAX takes away ALL of the harshness of LAX, as far as I'm concerned. It's the easiest intenational check-in I've ever experienced... and a short walk to Encounter (incredibly odd/groovy/kitchy futuristic bar atop the LAX 'spider') once you (inevitably) have time to kill following the painfree check-in...

unquestionably, take the Virgin flight. Now, BA Club vs. Virgin Upper is a different matter...
