Shrewsbury is generally fairly benign. The Heart of Wales option takes forever (5 - 6 hours, it is usually a one or two carriage rail motor and a very hilly, winding route), to get the details you have to use the rail site and ask for a journey from Swansea to Birmingham International VIA a station such as Knighton or Llandrindod. There is one that will get you to BHX at just after midnight, leaving Swansea at 6.21 pm. The Novotel is right at the terminal building, about 30 seconds walk.
You can book your ticket online through the rail site and they also give you tel number if you would rather ring them Or you can just buy a ticket when you go to the station.
