Is there anyway to "secure" an upperdeck seat even though it states seating is restricted to airport check-in?

Thanks
My understanding is, as a OW Emerald or Saphire you ought to be able to get pre-assigned seats but sometimes the BA computer doesn't recognize your AA status. When I've booked on BA I've found I have to call them to manually change the status before I can select a seat.
