I had the same situation last week - ba.com was showing 2 award seats available LAX-LHR in J, so I was straight on the phone to book (Amex 2-4-1). Agent said that there were no seats available, and that even if they showed available on the website I wouldn't be able to book them. As I was on the phone to her, I tried to book them (o/w regular award, would have been a nightmare trying to get them into a 2-4-1 if it had worked

) and lo and behold, she was right. Same message you're getting - 'not possible to confirm your booking'.
Think that the problem is not one of Amex payments, but incorrect award availability showing on ba.com. A different pain, but still a pain.
