I remember something last year about how AS was going to start charging for standby on lower fare buckets but hopefully (YES HOPEFULLY) they abandoned that idea. The charge for standby is my LEAST favorite aspect of Southwest and that's one reason why I would try to book on AS on routes where both they compete. If they want to get rid of 24 hour courtesy hold, that sucks, but I'd rather they did away with that than free standby.
I used standby quite a bit over the last few years mainly because AS was having so many problems I needed to book a later flight and standby on an earlier one just to be safe in case the flight that I was trying to get on would get cancelled. Actually came in handy but it meant I could not travel in F.
